My name is Adriana. I live in California’s East Bay with wonderful family and friends who all live very different lifestyles. While it is this diversity that makes the Bay Area special, it is this diversity that doesn’t always get the attention it deserves. As a mother, writer, and educator, I am often left amazed at how little attention is given to California’s current situation compared to the East Coast and Mid-West. There are big changes occurring in education, family life, and how young Californians view themselves. These are all big factors that influence not just the politics of the state, but how life is lived here.
As a woman of color and in an interracial relationship, I feel caught between two worlds. These two worlds can sometimes clash in terms of what I have been taught is correct versus what I experienced and observed. This frequently creates an inner dialogue that looks at the contradictions of the lessons taught to me in childhood and how my own daughter might experience life as she grows up in the Bay Area. Often, I find people who are in similar situations like myself don’t always get heard and feel left out of conversations. It feels like there are valuable insights are getting swept under the rug and becoming lost. Flying Blue Pig is meant to be a space where I want to share information and experiences with others who are in similar situations like my own or allow interested people to hear different perspectives and let them add the discussions I am trying to explore.
Some topics I am very interested in exploring are women in academia, how is COVID affecting the future of public education, how is family life changing in the bay area, etc. As time moves forward, I am sure some topics will be added or changed along the way. I will be curious to look back on these posts and see what results (if any) occur.
The very cute flying blue pig wallpaper was found free in the internet. If anyone knows who created it, I would love to give credit to the person. Thanks!
